The Circle of Stones
Tucked away on Dorset’s Jurassic Coastline, on the Isle of Portland, in an area which belonged to Tout Quarry, carvers of Group 85 from the Netherlands are creating an intriguing sculptural landscape.
Carved stones describe various themes such as mythological figures and floristic symbols but in particular a collection of pre historic animals which sit comfortably here on the Jurassic coast.
At the centre of the landscape stands a large horizontal stone slab, a kind of table or altar. At it’s centre, a shallow circular depression collects water when it rains.
Around the table there is a circle of carved stones which act as seats. A second circle consisting of larger boulders which may be used as benches orbits the first. Furthermore an outer circle of huge boulders creates a transition zone between the project and the surrounding area.
